eBay to Lay Off 9% of Workforce in Second Round of Job Cuts This Year

Online marketplace eBay plans to cut approximately 9% of its workforce, eliminating around 1,000 jobs in its second round of layoffs in 2026. Announced on October 21, the decision is part of CEO Jamie Iannone’s strategy to simplify operations and redirect resources towards the company’s fastest-growing business areas. The latest reductions come despite eBay’s strong stock performance and efforts to expand its presence in resale fashion, collectibles and authenticated luxury products.

eBay to Lay Off 9% of Workforce in Second Round of Job Cuts This Year

Online marketplace eBay plans to cut approximately 9% of its workforce, eliminating around 1,000 jobs in its second round of layoffs in 2026. Announced on October 21, the decision is part of CEO Jamie Iannone’s strategy to simplify operations and redirect resources towards the company’s fastest-growing business areas. The latest reductions come despite eBay’s strong stock performance and efforts to expand its presence in resale fashion, collectibles and authenticated luxury products.

eBay Targets Around 1,000 Jobs

In an internal memo reviewed by Reuters, Iannone told employees that the company needed to make strategic decisions about where to focus investment and resources. An eBay spokesperson confirmed the planned job cuts, adding that affected employees would be informed in the coming days.

The company had approximately 12,300 employees at the end of 2025. The latest reductions follow February’s decision to eliminate around 800 positions, representing approximately 6% of its workforce at the time.

The repeated cuts reflect eBay’s efforts to streamline its organisation and concentrate resources on areas it considers important for future growth.

Focus Shifts Towards High-Growth Categories

eBay has increasingly prioritised categories such as authenticated luxury goods, collectibles, refurbished products and secondhand fashion. These markets attract buyers seeking specialised products and sellers looking to reach established online audiences.

The company also completed its $1.4 billion acquisition of fashion resale platform Depop in 2026, strengthening its position among younger consumers and expanding its presence in the growing secondhand retail market.

Alongside these efforts, eBay has been developing live-shopping features and improving its marketplace experience to increase engagement among buyers and sellers.

Strong Stock Performance Amid Restructuring

Despite announcing another round of layoffs, eBay’s shares have risen nearly 40% in 2026, outperforming the broader US stock market over the same period.

The company reported stronger-than-expected revenue expectations in August following solid second-quarter results. Its strategy of focusing on selected product categories and resale markets has helped attract investor attention.

However, the workforce reduction indicates that eBay continues to reassess its operating structure and spending priorities as it pursues further growth.

Company Prepares for Its Next Earnings Report

eBay is scheduled to report its latest financial results on October 28, when investors will receive an updated picture of its performance and outlook.

The earnings report is expected to draw attention to revenue growth, marketplace activity and the financial contribution of its recent strategic initiatives. Investors will also be watching how the company balances cost reductions with investment in technology, customer experience and new business opportunities.

The latest layoffs highlight eBay’s effort to operate with a more focused workforce while strengthening its position in competitive online retail markets. The impact of the restructuring will depend on whether the company can improve efficiency without weakening the services that support its buyers and sellers.
