Apple Names John Ternus as New CEO After Tim Cook

Apple has officially handed over its top leadership role to John Ternus, marking the end of Tim Cook’s 15-year run as chief executive. Ternus took charge on September 1, beginning a new chapter for the technology giant at a time when artificial intelligence and product innovation are reshaping the industry.

Cook is not leaving Apple completely. He has moved into the position of executive chairman, allowing him to remain involved in the company while Ternus takes responsibility for its day-to-day leadership. The transition was planned by Apple as part of a long-term succession process.

John Ternus Takes the Helm

Ternus is a longtime Apple executive who joined the company in 2001 and most recently served as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Over the years, he has played an important role in the development of products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro.

His engineering background gives him a different profile from Cook, whose leadership was strongly associated with operations, supply-chain management and the expansion of Apple's services business.

For Ternus, the challenge will be to build on Apple's enormous success while finding the company's next major growth opportunities.

AI Becomes a Major Test for the New CEO

One of Ternus's biggest challenges will be Apple's position in the rapidly developing artificial intelligence race.

Apple has faced criticism for moving more slowly than some technology rivals in AI. The company has been working on improvements to Siri and other AI-related features, but expectations for Apple's AI strategy remain high.

Ternus will therefore need to push Apple's AI ambitions without losing the company's traditional focus on privacy, hardware-software integration and user experience.

Tim Cook Leaves Behind a Much Bigger Apple

Cook became CEO in 2011, following Steve Jobs, and leaves behind a company that is dramatically larger than the one he inherited.

During his tenure, Apple's annual revenue grew from roughly $108 billion to $416 billion, while the company's market value expanded to around $4.5 trillion. Cook also helped Apple build a much larger services business around products such as the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music and Apple Pay.

His leadership also saw Apple expand its hardware lineup with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods while gradually reducing its dependence on China for manufacturing.

A New Era for Apple

The leadership change comes at an important moment for Apple. Along with the AI race, the company is dealing with supply-chain changes, regulatory pressure and expectations for new products and services.

Ternus now has the difficult task of maintaining the stability that defined much of Cook's leadership while giving Apple enough momentum to compete in the next phase of the technology industry.

For Apple, the transition is more than simply a change of CEO. It marks the beginning of a new era, one in which Ternus will be expected to prove that the company can continue innovating after one of the most successful leadership periods in its history.
