American Airlines is changing one of the most valuable benefits available to its elite frequent flyers, limiting complimentary Business Class upgrades on several of its longest domestic routes.
Starting August 25, 2026, eligible AAdvantage status members travelling in the Main Cabin on selected transcontinental and Hawaii services will no longer automatically join the complimentary upgrade list for Business Class.
Instead, they will be considered for a free upgrade to Premium Economy, provided eligible seats are available.
The change affects travellers who have traditionally relied on elite status for the possibility of moving directly from an economy ticket into one of American’s most expensive domestic cabins.
Which American Airlines Routes Are Affected?
The revised upgrade policy will apply to several high-demand long-distance routes, including:
- New York JFK to Los Angeles
- Boston to San Francisco
- Dallas-Fort Worth to Honolulu
- Dallas-Fort Worth to Kona
- Dallas-Fort Worth to Maui
- Phoenix to Honolulu
- Chicago O’Hare to Honolulu
- Chicago O’Hare to Maui
These services are among American’s longer domestic flights and are increasingly being operated with aircraft offering multiple premium cabin options.
Premium Economy Becomes the First Free Upgrade
Under the new system, an elite passenger who buys an eligible Main Cabin ticket will generally move only one cabin higher through a complimentary upgrade.
That means travellers starting in economy will be prioritised for Premium Economy rather than Business Class on the affected services.
The shift effectively places another step between an economy ticket and a complimentary Business Class seat.
Premium Economy typically offers more space and enhanced services compared with the Main Cabin, although the product can vary depending on the aircraft operating the flight.
Business-Class Upgrades Are Still Possible
The policy does not eliminate complimentary Business Class upgrades completely.
Elite members who purchase a Premium Economy fare will still be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Business Class when eligible upgrade inventory is available.
Passengers who originally purchase an economy ticket and later pay to move into Premium Economy can also remain eligible for a complimentary Business Class upgrade.
As a result, elite status can still provide access to the premium cabin, but travellers may first need to spend more to secure a Premium Economy seat.
American Expands Premium Economy Strategy
American Airlines said the change comes as it expands Premium Economy across more domestic services.
The carrier is increasingly positioning the cabin as a separate premium product rather than simply an intermediate seating option between economy and Business Class.
